Why Does Reiki Healing Make You Cry?

Updated: Feb 10

Crying during or after a Reiki session is perfectly normal and can be incredibly therapeutic.

Here’s why:

1. Releasing Suppressed Emotions

We all carry emotional baggage—grief, anger, stress, or sadness—that we’ve suppressed over time. These emotions often settle into our energy field and body. During Reiki, as blocked energy begins to flow freely, these long-held emotions can rise to the surface, sometimes resulting in these cathartic tears.

2. Clearing Energetic Blockages

Reiki works by balancing your energy field - your 'life force' energy. When there’s a blockage caused by emotional trauma, stress, or burnout, Reiki can help dissolve it. Crying is often your body’s way of signalling that the block has been released, leaving you feeling lighter and freer.

3. Connecting to Your Authentic Self

Reiki helps you reconnect with your true self, the part of you that often gets buried under daily stress or life’s demands. This process can stir deep emotions as you let go of the weight of expectations or pain that no longer serves you.

Why Crying During Reiki is a Positive Sign

While crying may feel vulnerable or unexpected, it’s one of the most beneficial outcomes of a Reiki session and it can happen during as treatment, or even several days after as the Reiki continues to work through your energy. Here’s why:

1. Emotional Cleansing

Tears are like a detox for your emotions. As you cry, you’re literally releasing stress hormones and pent-up energy that’s been weighing you down.

2. Immediate Relief

Clients often describe a sense of relief or lightness after crying during a session. It’s as though they’ve released something heavy they didn’t realise they were carrying.

3. Accelerated Healing

Releasing old emotions makes space for new, positive energy to flow into your life. This can help you move forward, feeling clearer and more aligned.

And it's not just crying during Reiki; some people laugh! Other common side effects during a session include yawning, coughing and even a 'gurgly' tummy. It's just my clients who experience this too; as the healer, I often find your energy moves through me to release so I will be yawning and gurggling along with you.

It's not every session that these types of events occur, and you might find this doesn't happen to you whatsoever.

But incase you were wondering why does Reiki healing make you cry (or laugh or yawn for that matter!), I hope this has helped!
